Is IELTS an Unfair Exam?

IELTS is an international level exam, conducted by The Cambridge University to assess the basic skills of a person to qualify him/her for studying abroad and getting settle down in foreign countries. IELTS exam is conducted in two modes, online and offline. Offline test is a paper-based test, where one has to attempt all the three modules except speaking on the paper, whereas the online test is a computer-based test, where the candidate has to attempt three modules on the computer. Usually there are many rumors like; this is an unfair exam, candidates who do not get their desired bands, sometimes claim that the exam checking is not up to the mark, and they do not fair with the candidates, but actually this is not the case. There are several reasons, which prove that this exam is not unfair;

1.       As the IELTS exam all over the world is conducted by Cambridge University, and there is not any third party involved in it so there is no chance of cheating.

2.       Further, it is well known that the reading and the listening module is checked by computers so there is no chance of unbiased checking in these modules, the fact is one should write the answers with clear handwriting, in case of computer-based test, one has to type the answers and the computer will automatically check it.

3.       In the case of the writing module, people do not work on their writings rather expect to get high bands, and complain to the authorized centers for less scores but the fact is that the scoring of writing is based on several parameters, so instead of complaining the British council and IDP for less scores or unfair scores, the candidate should work on those parameters.

4.       Speaking test is a formal communication test, which assesses the speaking skills of a candidate, while scoring in this test, examiner keeps an eye on all the essential parameters and give bands to the candidate.

So, it would be wrong to say that the scoring in the IELTS exam is unfair, the only thing is one should be clear with all the facts about this test and do practice on all the parameters to get command on all modules so that he/she can get desired band scores.
